Alpine Skiing

SPA’s Alpine Skiing’s season came to an end in the section meet on Wednesday, February 7 at Wild Mountain. Some Spartan skiers will continue traveling to ski at the competitive, USSA level.

All-Conference: Liam Burns ‘28, McKinley Garner ’24 and Evy Sachs ’26

All-Conference Honorable Mention: Ella England ‘26, Henry Giles ‘24, Juliette Smith ’27 and Sophia Wenberg ’29


Nordic Skiing

After a great race at the Section 3A Nordic championship meet on February 6, members of SPA’s girls’ Nordic ski team qualified for the Minnesota State Nordic meet which was held February 14-15 at Giants Ridge. At the section meet, Inga Wing ’25 and Eleanor Mody ’27, won the section sprint relay by almost 40 seconds, and individually, Paloma Good ’27 finished 5th, Taylor Barkwell ’25 finished 7th, Maren Overgaard ’26 finished 8th, and Sophie Kannapiran ’28 finished 9th. At the State meet, the sprint team of Inga Wing and Eleanor Mody skied onto the podium with a second-place finish. In the individual pursuit competition, finishers included Paloma Good (36th); Taylor Barkwell (39th); Maren Overgaard (51st), and Sophie Kannapiran (72nd).

Fencing

The Minnesota High School Fencing Championships took place on Saturday, February 24, and Sunday, February 25 at St. Paul Academy and Summit School. Congratulations to our fencers on a great season! 

Individual events:

  • Women’s epee: Belle Weng ’25 (5th place) and Claire Kim ’24 (6th place)
  • Women’s saber: Rowan Moore ’26 (2nd place) and Annie Bai ’24 (3rd place)
  • Men’s saber: Yassin Mokbel ’26 (2nd place)
  • Men’s epee: Milan Mishra ’25 (6th place)

Team events:

  • Women’s epee: 3rd place
  • Women’s saber: 2nd place
  • Women’s foil: 9th place
  • Men’s epee: 2nd place
  • Men’s foil: 8th place
  • Men’s saber: 3rd place

Overall results:

  • Men’s epee: 3rd place

Boys’ Swim and Dive

At the 6AA section finals on Saturday, February 24 Rishi Bhargava’ 24, Finn Cox ‘25, Ben Lee ’26, and Connor Overgaard ’24 had great performances finishing in the top 8 in multiple events. Rishi and Connor along with two swimmers from Highland High School advanced to State after swimming a record time in the 200 Medley Relay. Individual times include: 

  • Rishi Bhargava: 3rd in the 100 breaststroke; 4th in the 400 Freestyle Relay; and 10th in the 200 IM
  • Finn Cox: 8th in the 200 Freestyle Relay; 12th in the 200 IM; and 12th in the 100 backstroke

  • Ben Lee: 8th in the 200 Freestyle Relay; 10th in the 100 breaststroke; and 14th in the 100 butterfly

  • Connor Overgaard: 4th in the 400 Freestyle Relay; 5th in the 100 backstroke; and 7th in the 100 butterfly

At the State meet, Rishi and Connor along with two swimmers from Highland High School finished 22nd out of 23 teams in what was a competitive field.

Boys’ Basketball 

The 2023-2024 year marked the winningest season in SPA boys’ basketball history. Their 22-7 record earned them the #1 seed in Section 4AA. The Spartans defeated Concordia Academy 65-35 in the opening round. They went on to beat St. Agnes in the Semifinal 59-49 before falling to Minnehaha Academy in the Championship round on Friday, March 15. | Bracket


Girls’ Basketball 

The Varsity girls’ basketball program had the most successful season in over a decade with an overall record of 18-8. The girls went on to receive the #6 seed in Section 4AA and defeated the #11th seed, Columbia Heights 59-53 in the opening round. SPA fell in the second round to the #3 seed, Visitation. Bracket


Boys’ Hockey

Boys’ hockey received the #5 seed in Section 4A and upset the #4 seed, Highland Park/Central in the opening round. SPA fell in the second round to the #1 seed, Mahtomedi on Monday, February 26. | Bracket
