Spartan Team Leaders

The Athletics Department provides varsity head coaches with a team captain selection process and application. Being selected as a captain is an important role and seen as a year long commitment to the team.  Captains will be selected after the season ends so student-athletes can begin their leadership roles.

Characteristics of a SPA Captain:

Role Model: Regardless of circumstances, a Captain is expected to rise above adversity and set the tone for the program.  This can be exhibited through the Student-Athlete’s decisions both on and off the playing surface.  A Captain’s conduct, dignity and sense of class should be evident by how he or she participates.

Culture Keeper: The climate of a team directly affects a Student-Athlete’s athletics experience.  Captains should support the coaching staff and their decisions. Uniting a group of diverse individuals requires  broad perspective, patience and unwavering support from a Captain to all of his or her teammates. Captains will find intentional ways to connect with all teammates regardless of a player’s role on the team or year in school.

Communicator: Captains serve as the bridge between the coaching staff and the team members.  In support of the coaching staff, Captains will meet regularly with coaches to ensure that the pulse of the team is always felt.  Captains will provide specific feedback, constructive criticism and also be willing to accept all opinions.

Additional Responsibilities:

Captain Family Involvement

Administrators, coaches, students, and parents will all work in partnership to create a positive learning environment in pursuit of competitive and athletic excellence.  In all cases, there are things that the school will provide for every team and there are things that the families will need to do in collaboration with one another.  In terms of leadership, captains play a vital role as team leaders and their parents also play an integral role in supporting the teams as well.

The athletic department has created a guide for the captains and their families to use in their efforts.
