ATHLETIC TRAINER

This service is provided inalt="" partnership with Twin Cities Orthopedics. The duties of the Athletic Trainer (ATC) include prevention of athletic injuries, recognition, evaluation, and immediate care of athletic injuries, rehabilitation and reconditioning of athletic injuries, health care administration, and professional development and responsibility as specified in the Domains of the NATA Certified Athletic Trainer. The ATC serves as a liaison between physicians, coaches, athletes, and parents. The ATC ensures that players participate only when physically able and that any physician instructions are understood and followed. The ATC will coordinate with the Athletic Director to ensure that the Athletic Training Room and all required events will be covered. The ATC also manages and administers the ImPact concussion testing across the school.  Our trainer is Anne Hutchins.

FIRST AID KITS/EAP’S
Coaches will be provided with a medical kit and emergency action plan (EAP) from the Athletic Trainer that will travel with the team at all times.

ImPACT TESTING/CONCUSSION RETURN TO PLAY GUIDELINE

All student-athletes involved in contact sports must complete ImPACT testing prior to participation in a contact sport. All athletes must be cleared by a physician or the Athletic Trainer before the return-to-play after sustaining a concussion.

INJURED PLAYERS

If an athlete is seen by a physician for an injury or illness that keeps them out of practices/games, he or she MUST have a signed doctors’ note or “Return to Play” form before they are allowed to resume participation. The paperwork can be faxed to the athletic office or given directly to the Athletic Trainer.

  • Student-athletes are not to be in the training room unless they are being examined or receiving treatment by the trainer/coach.
  • Whirlpool will not be used by students unless the coach is present. Never allow a student to be submerged to the neck level without a coach present. Time limit in the whirlpool is 11 minutes.
  • Notify parents immediately following all injuries. Follow up on all injuries that evening with a telephone call or personal visit.
  • First-aid kits, EAP’s and Medical Information will be with the Head Coach.
  • Taping for daily practice must be done prior to the start of practice
  • Every student-athlete at St. Paul Academy and Summit School is requested to report all injuries to their coach before, during or after practice, and to the Athletic Trainer.
  • The training room schedule is posted on the door of the training room.

MEDICAL COVERAGE FOR ATHLETIC EVENTS

An Athletic Trainer will be on campus for the majority of practices and cover most home varsity events to ensure the safety of the participants. An Athletic Trainer will also cover high-contact, home JV events for hockey, and football, and cover away varsity football. Through the use of cell phones, the Athletic Trainer is accessible in case of emergency.

It is important for families to note that in cases of an injury at an event, or during practice, the School will attempt to honor the families request regarding the choice of a personal physician or a designated hospital of choice; however, the School reserves the right to secure the most available and qualified assistance in cases of an injury to a student
