Spartan Tennis sweeps Class A State Titles in Team, Doubles and Singles Competition
After another phenomenal season, SPA boys’ tennis capped off a remarkable postseason by capturing Class A State championship titles in team, doubles, and singles competition.
This is the fourth year in a row that Spartan boys’ tennis has been crowned Class A State champions and the first time since 1965 that a boys’ tennis team has won four consecutive state titles. The team’s march through the postseason began the same way it did a year ago, with two resounding wins in Section 4A competition, defeating South St. Paul 7-0 in the quarterfinals and Academy of Holy Angels 7-0 in the semifinals setting up a rematch of the section final of the past two years against Mounds Park Academy. SPA came out on top with another shutout, 7-0, to qualify for the State tournament.
At State, the Spartans never lost as they defeated Minnewaska 7-0 in the quarters, Breck 7-0 in the semifinals, and Rock Ridge 7-0 for the Class A title. In the Star Tribune article about the team’s win, senior Jacob Colton ’25 said this year’s group tried to find a balance of honoring the past, but letting the group grow into its own saying: “At the beginning of the season, it was a little bit like, ‘How much do we try and keep from the previous years, and how much do we let it grow into its new thing?” Senior David Schumacher ’25 added, “It was really nice to be a part of that first [2022 title], just to see how we needed to act, a culture of winning is something that’s not really a reflection of us as much as the [past] seniors.”
This is the third year in a row that SPA has captured the championship in doubles competition. The Spartans sent two pairs to state: Jacob Colton ’25/Ben Macedo ‘25 and Allan Wang ’26/Isaak Senaratna ’27. Both pairs would march through section play convincingly and play one another for a trip to state. In the Section 4A championship, Colton and Macedo would win 6-4, 6-3 but Wang and Senaratna would advance as well. At State, Colton and Macedo defeated Benson/KMS 6-1, 7-5 in round 1, Foley 6-4, 7-6 (3) in round 2, and Rochester 6-0, 6-3 in the semifinals to advance to the championship. Wang and Senaratna’s path to the finals included wins over Thief River Falls 6-1, 6-2 in round 1, 6-0, 6-0 over St. Peter in round 2, and 3-6, 6-4, 6-1 over Cotter in the semis to set up an All-SPA showdown with Colton and Macedo in the championship. The championship match ended with Wang/Senaratna winning this time 6-3, 6-4 for the title.
It was also a championship year for singles player Winston Arvidson ’28, who advanced through section play with ease. At state, Arvidson defeated Duluth Marshall 6-0, 6-1 in round 1, Litchfield 6-0, 6-0 in round 2, North Branch 6-2, 6-0 in the semis, and Rochester 6-1, 6-1 to capture the singles title.
